Travel Security Abroad - Checklist

Check the FCO website for current Foreign OfficeWarnings

Inform people at home of itinerary/contact Nos/e-mail address

Contact home if trouble flares up while you are away

Avoid obviously ‘seedy’ areas

Avoid eye contact with ‘threatening’ individuals

Do not exhibit expensive jewellery/cameras/clothes in deprived areas

Keep carrying of cash and credit cards to a minimum

Conceal essential valuables about your person, in a moneybelt/sock

Consider carrying a personal alarm

Be aware of banned exports/endangered species/antiquities

Use small denomination notes. Don’t get your wallet out in public

Retain expired credit cards/old wallet to give a mugger

In accommodation check before opening your   (hotel) door

Use ‘do not disturb’ signs. Leave the television on

Do not leave your room key at reception. Anyone can see you are out

Use the web to check your credit card transactions regularly to notice fraud

Report any loss/theft to police to obtain a report for insurance claim

Report loss immediately to your insurer

Post 9-11 be aware of increased airport security
